Chase Junghans
Runner-up finish in USA Nationals prelim at Cedar Lake
Chase Junghans returned with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series on Thursday afternoon at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wis.) to kick off the 34th annual USA Nationals weekend with a $6,000-to-win preliminary feature. After a heat race victory earned him the pole position for the main event, persistent rain postponed the 30-lapper to Friday. (Todd Boyd photo)
Jumping into the lead on the drop of the green flag, Junghans paced the field for the first eight circuits until Ashton Winger stole the top spot. He challenged Winger for the lead on the final lap but fell 0.107 seconds short, marking him second on the rundown. Brandon Sheppard, Jimmy Owens, and Nick Hoffman completed the Top-5 finishers.
Later that evening for a pair of heat races, Chase came in 10th in his first heat before passing four cars to pick up the 12-lap victory in the second round. With the top 16 in passing points getting locked into the main event on Saturday, Junghans sat 22nd overall.
Starting in third in his B-Main on Saturday, Junghans secured his spot into the $50,000-to-win USA Nationals with a second-place finish. Rolling off 20th, Chase was an early retiree from the 100-lapper on the fourth lap after getting caught behind a tangle on the second circuit.
