On Tuesday afternoon, Chase Junghans returned to the driver’s seat of his Junghans Discount Liquor No. 18 Late Model at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) for the second round of the 51st annual DIRTcar Nationals. Drawing 55 cars, Junghans’ night was over after he followed up an eighth-place outing in his heat with a fifth-place finish in his B-Main. (Jim DenHamer photo)
In a field of 58 cars on Wednesday as the remainder of the week became World of Outlaws Case Construction Late Model Series sanctioned, Chase came in seventh in his heat, relegating him into the B-Main. Needing to place second or better to make the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Junghans fell one spot short with a third-place finish.
After placing sixth in his heat on Thursday, Junghans secured his spot into the feature with a second-place finish in his B-Main. With $10,000 on the line, Chase improved seven positions in the 40-lapper to finish 17th.
On Friday, Chase laid down the seventh-fastest time in his qualifying group before placing second in his heat. Earning the seventh-starting position for the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Junghans tracked down race-long leader Dennis Erb Jr. late in the race but was unable to overtake the front-runner amid lapped-traffic. He followed Erb Jr. across the line with Darrell Lanigan, Brandon Sheppard, and Dale McDowell completing the Top-5 finishers.
For the finale on Saturday, Junghans took part in his heat race but was a scratch from his 10-lap consolation event.
